The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has proposed to spend a total sum of about N41 billion on election conduct and payment of staff salaries in its N45.5 billion budget for the 2019 fiscal year, according to a report by LEADERSHIP
According to the figures released, a total sum of N17.5 billion has been budgeted for consolidated salaries of about 16,455 career officers and 51 political officers.
Also, N17.7 billion has been earmarked for core election activities, coordination of electoral activities and electoral capital projects.
Additional N3.4 billion has also been voted for election operation in the 2019 fiscal year while another sum of N3.4 was also budgeted for elections, referenda and recurrent expenses such as: operation department cost covering printing of ballot papers/ result sheets; printing of forms and envelopes, materials and supplies, logistics expenses, honoraria/other allowances for officials, security agencies, supervision, security supervision/ support including RAC preparation.
Other aspect in which the money will be used for includes election ICT support, election officials training and recruiting experiences, election fund management logistics, readiness assessment and compliance monitoring for election and printing of voter register for off section and by-elections which put the total sum for salaries and election conduct in 2019 fiscal year at N41 billion out of the N45.5 billion of its entire 2019 budget.
