At least, three persons were confirmed dead, while several others sustained various degrees of gun wounds when military personnel stormed a community day celebration at Isheri in Ifo local government area of Ogun state and opened fire on members of the community Tuesday night.
IVOTES gathered that the trigger – happy soldiers, believed to be from the 81 Mechanized Division, Ikeja Cantonment, Lagos allegedly invaded Isheri, venue of the Community day celebration in response to a distress call from their colleagues attached to the Lagos state special security outfit, “OP MESA”, deployed to the Kara Market at the Lagos end of the Lagos – Ibadan expressway.
It was further gathered that the “OP MESA” team had escorted a man, simply identified as “Tiri” to the Isheri Day celebration but was denied any V.I.P recognition at the event.
Eye witnesses told our correspondent that an attempt by Tiri to stamp his presence at the event, “at all cost” was resisted by some youths who initially pleaded with him to be patient.
Following an altercation that later ensued, Tiri and his soldiers escort were allegedly beaten up, while one of the soldiers allegedly lost his rifle in the incident.
The development however, compelled the military reinforcement from the 81 Division to storm Isheri where they opened fire on members of the community in retaliation of the attack on their colleagues.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Ogun state Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the story, stressing that the Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama has ordered investigation into the shooting of civilians at Isheri.
The PPRO in a statement issued in Abeokuta, the state capital on Wednesday, said credible information at the disposal of the command has it that four men of the Nigerian Army “believed to be from Ikeja Cantonment” carried out the attack on Isheri Olofin where three persons were killed on Tuesday night.
“Four (4) men of the Nigerian Army believed to be from Ikeja Cantonment and posted to Kara Market, left their beats and went to Isheri Olofin, a border town between Lagos and Ogun State where the indigenes of the town were celebrating their annual ‘Isheri Day’.
“The Soldiers, on getting there, had a minor disagreement with some youths which made the soldiers to start shooting sporadically into the air. Consequently, one Damilare Adelani was hit by bullets and he died on the spot.
“The ugly incident infuriated the people at the scene who in turn reacted violently against the soldiers leaving one of the soldiers and three other civilians injured.
“The Soldiers quickly took their injured colleague to a hospital (name with-held) where they met one of the injured civilians being attended to by a Medical Doctor on duty.
“The statement from the officials of the hospital reveals that the soldiers ordered the doctor at gun-point, to leave the injured man and attend to their colleague. They then dragged the patient out of the bed and subsequently stabbed him to death with a Bayonet attached to the muzzle of a rifle.”
Oyeyemi further stated that the Ogun state police command has contacted the military authorities at 35 Artillery Brigade Command in Ogun state over the matter, stressing that efforts are in place to ensure that the suspected killer(s) are brought to book.
