Stefanos Tsitsipas battled from a set down to upset World No. 1 Novak Djokovic to reach the semi-finals of the 2019 Shanghai Rolex Masters on Friday.
Greek 21-year-old Tsitsipas came from a set down – having lost the opening three games in seven minutes – to beat the defending champion 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Tsitsipas avenged his Madrid final defeat to Djokovic and improved to 2-1 in the pair’s head-to-head series, having won their first meeting last year in Toronto. The world No. 7 is bidding to lift his first Masters 1000 trophy and third title this season, following triumphs in Marseille and Estoril.
With his win over Djokovic, Tsitsipas has defeated each member of the Big 3 in 2019: he upstaged Roger Federer in the Australian Open fourth round and Nadal in the Madrid semifinals.
He will play Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals after the Russian defeated Fabio Fognini 6-3 7-6 (7-4).
