Nigerians have thrown their weight behind the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, over the recent decision of the electoral umpire to deregister 74 political parties in the country.
The results of an online poll conducted by Premium Times, an online newspaper, revealed that majority of Nigerians are in tandem with the decision of the Commission.
Participants in the poll were asked a single question: “Is the deregistration of some political parties by INEC a good move?” with options of “yes”, “no”, “we need less parties” and “I don’t care.”
While 71 percent said the deregistration was a good idea; 5 percent believe that the decision was not good; 17 percent said the country needs voted for less parties, and the other 7 percent said they don’t care.
IVOTESNG reports that the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, had announced that the Deregistration of the political parties on February 6.
The deregistration exercise brings the number of political parties in the country down to 18.
The deregistration of the parties followed their poor performance in the 2019 general elections.
