The Edo State Police Command on Tuesday disclosed that it has in collaboration with Vigilante group in the state, rescued 26 victims of human trafficking.
The Command in a statement by its public relations officer, SP Kontongs Bello said rescued victims which women and children are believed to have been trafficked from Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Anambra and Akwa Ibom States respectively to Evbuotubu in Ekenwan Road axi of Benin City.
They include six women, nineteen children and one teenager.
He explained that the women were lured from their various home states by a woman named Jennifer also called Ezine with surname yet unknown. The woman is now on the run.
He said, “They were lured in a guise that Edo State Government is giving financial support to single mothers with new born babies especially twins. But on arrival in BENIN city, they discovered different, met no support but were now forced to engage in illicit business . The women said they were forced to go for street begging for their mistress “Jennifer. They further stated that only pea-nut is given to them to take care of their children and feeding from proceed of the begging.
“The Command is using this medium to inform the general public that, they should disregard the rumours making around especially in the social media that “Women and Children rescued from Baby Factory by the Police in Benin City as the story is not true. It is just the imagination of some mischief makers to engage in such publication as the act is an attempt to paint EDO State in bad light.”
