A total of 17 political parties are participating in the ongoing Local Government election in Rivers State, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), fielding the highest number of chairmanship and councillorship candidates.
iVotesNG reports that there was voter aparthy as majority of the indigenes and residents of Rivers State, stayed away from the local government election, which will usher in a new set of chairmen and councillors in the 23 local government areas of the state.
Some voters, who spoke with iVotesNG at Ogu and Boko communities in Ogu/Bolo local government area, as well as in Akpabu, Saakpenwa and Ubie communities in Emojis, Tai and Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni local government areas of the state, respectively, decried late arrival of materials in their polling units.
Other voters who spoke said they decided to go back to their various homes after waiting endlessly for electoral materials to be sent to their polling units, they were told that the exercise would commence from 8:00am but did start until 11:00am.
The leadership of the 17 political parties had last Monday signed a peace accord in the presence of leadership of security agencies in the state.
The logo and name of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was however not on the ballot box as it’s leadership in the state officially wrote to RSIEC declining participation in the local government election.
Our Correspondent observed that most of the polling units were empty with only the electoral officers and security personnel, as most residents were seen seated outside their houses while youths of voting age were playing football on the major roads.
